The American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Charitable Trust

The sole purpose of the Charitable Trust is to promote the health and well-being of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. For over 20 years, we have provide financial and other support for research, education and charitable initiatives to benefit the breed. Areas of support have included MVD (heart) and SM (spine) research, veterinary scholarships, health testing, educational seminars and much more.

While the Charitable Trust funds projects and grants to benefit Cavaliers, there is not a single health condition unique to Cavaliers. The research we assist often benefits other dogs, other animals, and even human beings.

Rejuvinate Bio – an Example of Our Funding at Work

Rejuvenate Bio is a medical research organization working on novel gene therapies to treat chronic age-related diseases that affect 6 in 10 Americans. The Charitable Trust partnered with Rejuvenate Bio in the successful trial of  a gene therapy to stop progression of heart failure in dogs. The trial was conducted at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. (It was even profiled in a “Sixty Minutes” episode.) This trial is an important step in bringing these gene therapies to both canine and human communities.

Choosing Projects & Grants to Fund

With so many projects and researchers seeking funds, you might wonder how we decide where to spend our precious resources. We are fortunate to have an amazing group of people who serve on the Charitable Trust Health Committee. They bring deep expertise in a wide range of medical, canine and Cavalier-specific areas. From reviewing grant applications to searching the globe for high-potential initiatives to occasionally spearheading projects themselves, our Health Committee has what it takes to ensure Charitable Trust dollars are well spent.

Additionally, the Charitable Trust has partnered with the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF), a non-profit donor advised fund dedicated to the health of purebred dogs. We determine the CHF projects in which to participate. The CHF matches our funding and oversees the projects. It’s a match made in Cavalier heaven.

Who We Are
