The AKC DNA Program recommends that breeders perform DNA tests that are relevant to their breed. Although the AKC DNA + Health Kit includes over 328 markers for health and traits, not all genetic variants have been validated in every breed. Some tests may have significance in some breeds, but a positive results may not cause disease in another breed. Additionally, some genetic tests are not included in the AKC DNA + Health Kit. Breeders may also choose to make breeding decisions based on genetic tests that are not included in Parent Club recommendations but may still be relevant to their breed or line.
The AKC offers a comprehensive set of voluntary and mandatory programs to ensure the integrity of the AKC registry, and now includes genetic health and traits testing (including coat colors)!
